"The Trainee in Difficulty"  This course will help Trainers develop skills to manage trainees in or heading for difficulty.  It will show how existing tools can be adapted to help, and give practice in the use of appropriate conversation techniques to achieve positive outcomes for training. It is suitable for all doctors especially those in training roles (eg:  Clinical and Educational Supervisors, College Tutors, TPDs, RAs HoSs). The course uses a blend of independent preparatory learning with intensively-facilitated practical sessions on the day.  Pre-recorded lectures and preparatory work (taking about 3 hours) must be completed beforehand to support the small-group work.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

 

 

This course will help Trainers develop skills to manage trainees in or heading for difficulty.  It will show how existing tools can be adapted to help, and give practice in the use of appropriate conversation techniques to achieve positive outcomes for training.

 

It is suitable for doctors of ST7 and above, but especially those in training roles (eg:  Clinical and Educational Supervisors, College Tutors, TPDs, RAs HoSs).

 

The course uses a blend of independent preparatory learning with intensively-facilitated practical sessions on the day.  Pre-recorded lectures and preparatory work (taking about 3 hours) must be completed beforehand to support the small-group work.

 

Objectives

By independently studying pre-recorded lectures before attending the course, delegates will understand the tools utilised in the supervision of trainees, and how to apply them to doctors in difficulty.  These tools include:

             •       Feedback

             •       Appraisal

             •       Formative assessment by WBAs

             •       Assessment meetings with trainees

 

By attending the course delegates will take part in multiple intensively-facilitated small-group practical sessions during which they will fine-tune their skills to apply these tools and conversation techniques to trainees in difficulty.  They will practice how best to:

             •       recognise a trainee in difficulty

             •       Instigate mechanisms for early detection

             •       collect appropriate evidence

             •       discuss problems with a trainee and assess insight

             •       set an action plan

             •       write an objective report

             •       support trainees

             •       access help

By July 2016 all Clinical and Educational Supervisors need to be approved by the GMC according to their 7 areas for Trainer Recognition.  This 1-day course includes material from the following four areas:

 

             1.      Ensuring safe and effective patient care

             5.      Supporting and monitoring the educational process

             6.      Guiding personal and professional development

             7.      Continuing professional development as an educator
