Introduction to Ophthalmic Surgery course - 24 April 2023
This course is designed to serve as an introduction to ophthalmic surgery and will offer an opportunity for trainees to learn some of the core skills that form the building blocks of ophthalmic surgery. The focus will be on hands-on practical experience with only short introductions to each topic and at least 5 hours of simulated surgery using the latest model eyes. The course is open to Foundation Doctors, Medical students, Overseas Doctors, in fact anyone who is considering a career in ophthalmology.

It is not mandatory to have attended this course if you later enter a UK ophthalmology training programme, but you will still be awarded 1 point for your portfolio at ST1 National Recruitment.

9.00 - 9.15am                     Welcome and Introduction 

9.15 – 9.30am                    Knots with string demonstration and practice

9.30 – 9.50am                    Instruments talk

9.50 – 10.20am                  Suturing practice on foam boards

10.20 – 10.30am                Needles/sutures talk                      

10.30 – 10.45am                Coffee break

10.45 – 11.00am                Eyelid suturing demonstration

11.00 – 11.30am               Practice lid suturing techniques

11.30 – 11.45am               Scleral and rectus muscle suturing demonstrations

12.00 – 12.45pm               Scleral and rectus muscle suturing practice

12.45 - 1.35pm                 Lunch

1.35 – 1.50pm                   Introduction to operating microscopes and corneal suturing

1.50 – 2.50pm                   Corneal suturing skills practice

2.50 – 3.20pm                   Philosophy of learning and practical advice

3.20 – 3.30pm                   Corneal incision demonstrations

3.30 – 3.45pm                   Coffee break

3.45 – 4.45pm                   Practicing corneal incisions and suturing practice

4.45 – 5.00pm                   Closing discussion Q&A

Each trainee will also have the opportunity to spend 15 minutes on the EyeSi on a rolling rotation throughout the day using the 1st setting of the basic anterior chamber navigation module.
